text-align: left;">this was a fun, easy pattern to follow. i had never used a chart before in knitting, and its pretty easy-- especially if you have the pattern printed out (right now im working on something and i keep forgetting to print it-- annoying to have to stay by the computer to read it). it turned out a little snug, but i sent it to my sister for her birthday and she said she likes it.. i haven't seen it on her yet to verify.

next up is wurm (pdf). this hat turned out a lot bigger than i wanted. i've had the 'hat too small' problem several times in the past, so i opted to make the largest size for this. it turned out like a rasta hat, which may or may not be a good thing.

and i set to work. i didn't really follow more of a pattern than this. it turned out a little quirky, but i thought that was part of the lobster's charm. well, that and the button eyes. when i finished, i sewed on a little friend that a coworker gave to me:

perfect. the one difficult obstacle was figuring out how to get this giant stuffed lobster to stay on my head. i sewed velcro on his stomach, and then also onto a black hat. it was wobbly, but it worked. for the cord i very loosely crocheted a black chain that i sewed into the lobster tail and then pinned to my side, and i made a dial by printing and cutting two pieces of paper reinforced with packing tape. here's an after-wearing picture (it got sorta beat up with use):

as for the rest, i wore a black dress, tights and shoes and voila! lobster phone! final product (with strongbad boyfriend):

<a href="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1264/5129188573_c682d03d84_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; that the red flower is actually called a pup, and it will eventually become a new plant! how cool! i also bought a poinsettia and a christmas cactus. so my house is definitely getting some quality oxygen these days.

also, yesterday was handmade arcade. i bought some text-align: center;">

so i got a new computer. its very little and very fast.. just what i wanted.

so what is the first thing i do with a new gadet? that is correct– make a case for it. i am going to call this thing a computer sock. much like the ipod socks, this 'case' doesnt really protect TOO much, but it will prevent scratches. i used some of the yarn from my aunt: colinette yarns ltd's skye. its decidedly 90s, but i decided i like it.

i kind of just winged (wung?) the whole thing.. i made a little swatch to see how many stitches i needed to make it wide enough, and just went to town and knitted this thing up. LUCKILY, its perfect.. when i bound it off, the stretch got zapped from the ribbing, but it makes a nice closure to stay around the computer. i suppose its more like a sweater than a sock.. but enough histrionics.

now its back to christmas presents........

the kitchen sink.

making another hat right now. the yarn is absolutely beautiful handspun that my old roommate left behind when she moved to new mexico (thanks, alexis!!!). the colors are just breathtaking to knit through, and the fiber feels so good on my fingers. the name of the yarn is 'kitchen sink' because its made up of randomly odds and ends from the artist. ahh.. its going to be a warm, beautiful hat. Her hats are always fit fabulously (i said fabulously, yes).
this was my first experience with noro. ive seen ravelry-ins using it for awhile, and i wanted to see why people go so nuts over it. PROS: i really liked the colorway, so creative and different. i usually stray from using self-striping yarns, because i just dont like how the colors blend into one another, but noro's is so nice. CON: the yarn broke twice (both at crucial moments of the project, which was extremely nerve-racking, but i got through it.)

i used to think that i really liked crochet hats. after this, i am pretty sure i liked knitted ones better.. they use less yarn, less bulky, and stretchier in the right places. sorry, crochet. i loved you for so long, but it seems as if i am moving on to knitting. its not you, its me.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Last weekend I made a dress using a vintage patten and it turned out very large, so for a few days i was perplexed with what to do next. a friend helped me out with an idea of elevating the dress with balloons. i had a very busy week and i did not get a chance to completely think this through before friday.. so after leaving work early i picked up twenty balloons, ran home to get my dress, a suitcase, and some patience, and scooted down to the gallery to set it up before the show started.

for some reason i had the notion that this was going to work on the first try. it didnt. it also did not work the second, third, or fourth time. after i became completely exasperated, i realized the dress was unable to be held up by balloons alone. i called michelle and she came down to the space to help me. i ended up suspending the dress from the ceiling by wire, and then stuffed the dress full of balloons and 'tied it down' with a suitcase. considering the entire process of making this piece work, i am very happy with how it turned out.

the opening was a huge success and lots of people showed up. i enjoyed myself, but i dont really have positive aversions to art right now. its pretty frustrating for me because i think that its important for art to have a purpose, which is why i hold pottery and fiber arts in higher esteem than abstract canvasses and conceptual art in general. i understand rothko and hesse but i think that today's contemporary art movement is too concerned with getting "in" the art scene and not so much with integrity and creative executions of great ideas.

..but dont take my word for it.

(special thanks to michelle font-size: 85%;">so this past weekend i made a new bag (ravelry).. i decided to call it 'galavanting,' because i want to be able to cruise around town and put everything i need inside a single bag. i think i have accomplished this.. because this bag is enormous. i need to add some sort of closure (a button and loop i think), but i have not found the right one yet. i might trek over to natural stitches sometime this week.. i want to get some circular knitting needles anyway so i can start practicing for my first knitted cowl!

i used almost three skeins (almost 600 yards!) of araucania ulmo (on clearance at natural stitches), worked mostly in double and single crochet, except for the gathering between the handles i used front and back post stitches. the lining is vintage (i think) fabric from my favorite thrift store, and the green bias-tape-like stuff is also from a thrift store. the second and third photo show the bag pre-lining, so thats why it looks so flat.

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3444/3713727357_622f3e99a6.jpg?v=0" style="cursor: pointer;
